On the ocassion of the World Environment Day, 2021, the Centre in collaboration with the NSS (National Service Scheme) Cell of Dibrugrah University organized an online talk on Eco-restoration and the Role of Youth. It was attended by various Programme Officers of NSS College Units, NSS Volunteers apart from students and faculty of the Centre. The resource persons for the talk were Prof. S P Biswas, Retired Professor of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University and Mr. Rajib Rudra Tariang, Assistant Professor and HoD, Department of Zoology, Digboi College. The programme started with a brief welcome speech from Dr. Devid Kardong, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Dibrugarh University wherein he introduced the speakers. Prof. Kumud Chandra Goswami, Chairperson, CMSDU in his speech stressed that people have to act to take care of the environment and not only talk about environment protection.
Prof. S P Biswas in his talk discussed about eco-restoration in the context of aquatic habitats. He was of the opinion that wetlands must be protected from the onslaught of development including in Dibrugarh. He discussed about the major environmental issues affecting Assam. Mr. Tariang who is also associated with NSS as a Programme Officer gave a detailed overview of the role of youth in protecting the environment and fighting environmental degradation. He discussed about the various works being done by the NSS Unit of his College for protection and preservation of the flora and fauna of the college as well as the adjoining areas. The resource persons also took some queries from the audience. Prof. Kumud Chandra Goswami in his comments said that Digboi College NSS Unit under the leadership of Dr. Tariang was doing exceptional work and this movement has to spread to other institutions. At the end of the programme, the vote of thanks was given by Dr. Himadri Barman, Assistant Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Dibrugarh University. The talk was streamed lived on the YouTube channel of the Centre.
